La Poste group has set itself the target of "zero net emissions" by 2040. To achieve this, the Group is stepping up its efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of its activities.

Targets in line with the Paris Agreement

In October 2021, La Poste group signed the Science-Based Targets Business Ambition for 1.5°C, which aims for "zero net emissions" of greenhouse gases by 2050 at the latest. In March 2024, La Poste Group obtained validation from the Science-Based Targets (SBTi) initiative of its "zero net emissions" trajectory by 2040, a decade ahead of the targets set by the Paris Agreement.

Moving towards low-carbon modes of transport

Reducing transport-related emissions is a major challenge for the Group. This involves both technological choices and changes in behaviour. The Services-Courrier-Colis and Geopost divisions are the main players in this field. Vehicles powered by electricity, NGV (natural gas for vehicles) and BioGNV (gas obtained from the methanisation of various types of organic waste), cargo bikes and staby (electric two-wheelers) are gradually replacing internal combustion vehicles, whose age and Euro standards are also being optimised.

To achieve "zero net emissions", an urban logistics development plan has been put in place. La Poste group has signed territorial agreements with French cities to draw up concerted action plans to develop greener urban logistics.

La Poste group is also aiming to deploy responsible urban logistics by 2025, ensuring 100% clean delivery (zero and low emissions) in 350 towns and cities in Europe.

One of Europe's leading electric fleets

The Group has one of the largest fleets of electric vehicles in Europe, with 37% of its fleet electrified. Thanks to the size of its fleet, La Poste has contributed to the development of an electric vehicle ecosystem in France.

Optimising industrial and logistics organisation

The Services-Courier-Colis Division is rationalising its national and regional routes by increasing the use of stowed bulk (which means that 25% more parcels can be loaded on each journey), the use of swap bodies in lorries and the optimisation of engines (now 83% EURO VI ).

Continued optimisation of transport and loading patterns, and the decarbonisation of the fleet have enabled Colissimo and Geopost to reduce emissions per parcel by 5% in 2023 compared with 2022.

Commitment to fighting climate change and sustainably managing energy

La Poste group's action to promote the ecological transition of the Transport Logistics sector is also reflected in the selection of its transport suppliers and subcontractors on the basis of CSR criteria.

Deploying a "Sustainable Real Estate" policy

The diversity of La Poste's property portfolio and its location in the heart of France make it unique. Its energy consumption represents half of the group's energy footprint.

Since 2010, La Poste Immobilier has deployed an energy management system for all its buildings. Since 2016, the entire building stock has been supplied with 100% electricity from renewable sources.

To accelerate the energy transition of the postal estate, La Poste group and EDF have signed a long-term strategic partnership covering a comprehensive energy offering

Being a leader in impact finance

La Banque Postale and its subsidiaries are involved in numerous sectoral initiatives to promote more sustainable finance.

La Banque Postale also intends to establish itself as the European leader in positive-impact finance. It is committed to achieving "zero net emissions" by 2040 across all its banking activities. As the first generalist manager to be 100% SRI (Socially Responsible Investment), it is also the first financial institution to sign up to the 1.5°C trajectory.

In January 2024, CNP Assurances, a subsidiary of La Banque Postale, became a partner in the Nature Impact initiative launched by WWF France to finance projects to preserve, restore and sustainably manage forests with a high biodiversity value in mainland France. This is an unprecedented form of cooperation between forestry players and the business world.

Sharing its expertise with customers

La Poste group intends to share its expertise with individuals and businesses to help them accelerate their own transition in the area of mobility. A number of postal services are on offer:

  • co-working with Startway ;

  • long-term rental of electric commercial vehicles for professionals with Movivolt;

  • first and last mile logistics with Log'issimo;

  • long-term hire of electrically-assisted bicycles with Bemobi and Veligo d'IDF Mobilité.
