Green Postal Day 2026: the Global Postal Sector accelerates Its Environmental Transition

A global commitment
Postal operators around the world¹ report that they have reduced their annual greenhouse gas emissions by more than 41% compared with 2008 levels. This represents a significant step towards the sector’s collective target of a 50% reduction by 2030.
These results are the outcome of transformation efforts implemented across the entire postal logistics chain. Postal operators have notably achieved their 2030 vehicle electrification target several years ahead of schedule, while 36% of the electricity consumed in their facilities now comes from renewable sources.
Long-distance transport: the next decarbonisation challenge
Having significantly reduced emissions associated with last-mile delivery, postal operators are now focusing their efforts on medium- and long-distance transportation.
To achieve this, they are progressively deploying electric heavy-duty vehicles and vehicles powered by alternative fuels, while also testing new solutions for air freight.
A new tool to measure the impact of international deliveries
The 2026 edition of Green Postal Day is also marked by the launch of the Carbon Footprint Calculator, a tool developed by thirteen postal operators that are members of the IPC². It enables the precise measurement of emissions associated with international deliveries.
By providing e-retailers and their customers with detailed information on the environmental impact of shipments, this solution helps strengthen transparency and traceability across international trade flows.
The Group La Poste continues its decarbonisation journey
As a pioneer of environmental transition within the postal sector, the Group La Poste is making a full contribution to this collective momentum. The Group now operates 12,000 buildings supplied with 90% renewable electricity.
At the end of 2025, 19.2% of the kilometres travelled by La Poste and 18.4% of those travelled by Geopost were already carried out using low-carbon transport solutions. The Group’s ambition is to reach 50% low-carbon heavy goods transport by 2030.
The Group is also working to help customers better understand the impact of their shipments. As early as 2023, Geopost developed a carbon calculator for businesses, while in France, La Poste offers an environmental score designed to raise awareness among both individual and business customers.
